Backtrack is a most popular Linux distribution used for Penetration testing and Security Auditing. Now the latest Backtrack version is Backtrack 5 R3 with some new features. A lot of hacker use Backtrack as their Operating System. I think this is the best operating system for hacker. Backtrack is a Linux so if you want learn using Backtrack be sure you learn the command line of linux. There are many tools in Backtrack, there are penetration tools, information gathering tools, forensics tools, and other powerful tools (about 360 tools).

Getting Stared
Backtrack is a Linux distribution so Backtrack is an open source operating system. You can download Backtrack 5 R3 from www.backtrack-linux.org. Choose your architecture, windows environment (KDE, or GNOME), and the method you download it (direct nor torrent). After you installing backtrack you will find some issue, error, or bugs. Such as blank screen after installation, the sound does not work properly, an error notification in the wireless adapter program manager, etc.

After you install it, try browse the Backtrack features and then read Backtrack wiki. This site officially publishs from www.backtrack-linux.org for Backtrack user. After that you must learn how to install a program. Installing a package on Backtrack 5 little bit different with Windows operating system. Some packages only can be install with terminal (command line).

Then build your own lab. You can call it “virtual hacking”. You can learn how to hack, how to attack, how to destroy without make any damage that doesn’t harm other people. You can make your own hacking lab using Virtual Machine.

After build your lab, now try to learn and use the most popular framework of penetration tester, Metasploit Framework. Learn it by read the Metasploit wiki and practice at your lab. If you find a problem, search it on Google or email me if you don’t get the solution :)

In the next part I will post about wireless security. Ok see you in Backtrack 5 R3 Walkthrough Part 2
